How to Play Euchre

The Midwest's fast little giant — five tricks, two bowers, and a lifetime of table talk about that one hand.

Play Euchre free

Euchre is the four-player partnership game of the American Midwest and Ontario — church basements, cottages, break rooms. It's tiny (24 cards, five tricks, minutes per hand) and endlessly replayable because of one twist: the bowers. When a suit becomes trump, its Jack becomes the highest card in the game — and the other Jack of the same colour secretly joins the trump suit as second-highest. Forgetting that is how every Euchre player learns the game.

What you need

  • 4 players in two partnerships — partners sit opposite.
  • A 24-card deck: 9, 10, J, Q, K, A of each suit (no joker — that's the British variant).
  • 5 cards each, dealt in twos and threes; the next card is turned face up as the proposed trump.

The bowers

Say hearts are trump. The trump suit, high to low, becomes:

J♥ (right bower) · J♦ (left bower — a heart now!) · A♥ · K♥ · Q♥ · 10♥ · 9♥

The J♦ belongs to the trump suit for every purpose: it follows hearts, it does not follow diamonds, and only the J♥ outranks it. Seven trump cards, two of them Jacks — that's Euchre.

Making trump

  1. Round 1 — starting left of the dealer, each player may order up the up-card's suit as trump or pass. If ordered, the dealer picks up the up-card and discards one face down. The ordering side are the makers.
  2. Round 2 (all four passed) — each player may name any suit except the up-card's, or pass.
  3. Stick the dealer: if the other three pass again, the dealer must name a suit. No thrown-in hands here.
  4. The makers need 3 of the 5 tricks. Before the first lead, the maker may declare going alone — their partner sits out entirely. Defenders may go alone too.

Playing a trick

  1. Follow the led suit if able — with the left bower counted as trump, never its printed suit.
  2. Void → play anything; trumping is optional.
  3. Highest trump wins, else the highest card of the led suit. Five tricks and the hand is scored.

Scoring

ResultPoints
Makers take 3 or 4 tricks1
Makers take all 5 — a march2
Makers take fewer than 3 — euchreddefenders 2
Lone maker takes all 54 (3–4 tricks alone still scores 1)
Lone defender euchres the makers4

First team to 10 points wins. Getting euchred hurts twice — the points go the other way, and the table never forgets.

Strategy — first principles

  • Count trump as seven cards and always ask where the left bower sleeps.
  • Order up with three trump. Three trump plus an off-ace is the classic call; two trump is a prayer.
  • Lead trump as the maker; lead your singleton ace as a defender.
  • Go alone on Jack-Jack. Both bowers plus an ace is the textbook lone hand — four points beckon.
  • Stuck as dealer? Name your longest suit and hope its Jack answers prayers.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is the left bower?

The Jack of the same colour as trump. Spades trump → J♣ is the left bower, counts as a spade, and is second only to J♠. It never counts as a club while spades are trump.

What does "euchred" mean?

The makers failed to take three tricks — the defenders score 2. It's the game's name and its sharpest sting.

What if everyone passes twice?

The dealer is stuck: they must name a suit (any but the turned-down one). This app plays stick-the-dealer, like every major digital version.

Can the defenders go alone?

Yes — defending alone is allowed, and a lone defender who euchres the makers scores 4.

Why only 24 cards?

Tradition from the game's German-immigrant roots — and it makes trump gloriously dense: with the left bower, seven of 24 cards are trump every hand.

Why did the app play a card for me?

When exactly one card is legal it's played automatically after a short pause — and a stalled turn gets the lowest legal card.

What is stick the dealer?

A common house rule: if everyone passes twice, the dealer must name a trump suit rather than redeal. It speeds the game up and puts real pressure on the deal.

Can you go alone in Euchre, and what is it worth?

Yes. Declare it before the first lead and your partner sits the hand out. Taking all five tricks alone scores 4 points instead of 2; taking three or four still scores the normal 1.

How many points do you need to win Euchre?

10 points. Hands are short — five tricks each — so a full match usually takes eight to twelve hands. See Euchre terms for the full vocabulary.
