Pronounced YOO-ker. Spelled like nothing else in English.

The most misspelled game in the Midwest

Euchre is said YOO-ker, and absolutely nothing about those six letters tells you that. So the game gets typed the way it sounds: uker, youker, euker, yuker, sometimes ucher. Every one of them is the same game — the lightning-fast trick-taker of Michigan basements, Ontario cottages, Indiana firehouses and Wisconsin bars. If you got here on any spelling of it, you are in the right place.

Why it is spelled that way

The most-cited origin is the Alsatian game Juckerspiel, carried to America by German-speaking immigrants in the 1800s; "Juck" softened into "euchre" through ears and newspapers rather than through any spelling committee. We report that as the standard account rather than settled fact — card-game etymology is a swamp — but it explains the J-sound ghost in the spelling.

The game in one minute

Four players in two partnerships and a tiny 24-card deck — nine through ace in each suit. One card is turned up to propose trump; players may order it up or pass, and a second round lets any player name a different suit — and if everyone passes twice, the dealer is stuck and must name one (this table plays stick the dealer). The jack of trumps is the right bower, the highest card in the game, and the other jack of the same colour becomes the left bower, second highest and counted as a trump. Five tricks a hand: three wins the point, all five is a march worth 2, and failing your own call is being euchred — two points to the other side. Going alone, without your partner, pays 4 if you sweep. First team to 10 points wins.

One game, many tables

Euchre is a family with fierce local pride — three-hand cutthroat, Bid Euchre, Pepper, British euchre with a joker called the Benny. Our variants page maps them; the game here is the classic four-hand, and our rules match how the Midwest actually plays it.

Uker — common questions

Is uker the same as euchre?

Yes — uker is just the phonetic spelling. YOO-ker. Same bowers, same five tricks, same arguments.

How do you pronounce euchre?

YOO-ker. Two syllables, stress on the first. The spelling is a historical accident, not a pronunciation guide.

What is a bower?

The two most powerful cards in the hand. The jack of the trump suit is the right bower; the jack of the same colour is the left bower and counts as a trump. Our glossary covers the rest of the table talk.

Why is it called being "euchred"?

When the side that named trump fails to take three tricks, they have been euchred — stopped at their own game — and the defenders score two.
